Quantum Metrology & Learning

Metrology is the field of measurement and estimation. All experiments and technologies involve some sort of metrology. In this presentation, I will provide an introductory overview of the field of metrology. First, I will introduce the statistical framework for studying metrology. Using this framework, I will describe single-parameter estimation: the process of learning a single unknown parameter ????. I will give examples of classical and quantum metrology techniques; and I will show how the quantum techniques can outperform the classical ones. Finally, I will describe a recent experiment, in which collaborators and I used quantum phenomena to improve the precision of polarimetry technology by a factor of 200.
